ASAA Statement on Humboldt Broncos Tragedy

April 9, 2018

In the wake of the unspeakable tragedy involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team this past Friday - the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association wishes to extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families, as well as the entire community of Humboldt, Saskatchewan.

There are no words that can properly convey the grief we feel for the families affected by this tragedy. As an organization that is involved in athletics, we are all too familiar with the ritual of traveling with our teammates on long prairie bus trips to play a game we love. An accident like this is a coach and parent’s worst nightmare.
This tragedy strikes close to home in many of our communities. A number of the victims were from Alberta or played ASAA athletics. We join with their communities in mourning and pause to remember each of the Albertan victims and their families:

Parker Tobin, 18 - Memorial Composite, Stony Plain - Badminton
Logan Boulet, 21 - Winston Churchill High, Lethbridge - Rugby, Curling
Logan Hunter, 18 - St. Albert Catholic High - Golf
Jaxon Joseph, 20 - Edmonton
Stephen Wack, 21 - St. Albert
Connor Lukan, 21 - Slave Lake

It is also with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the loss of one of our own in Friday’s tragedy. Logan Boulet of Lethbridge is the son of ASAA Executive Committee member Toby Boulet. Logan proudly signed his organ donor card just weeks before the accident and through his passing at least 6 other lives will be extended thanks to his gracious and selfless act of being an organ donor; Logan will be remembered for his heroism.
We offer our sympathy and support to the entire community of Humboldt and will keep the families of the deceased and injured survivors in our thoughts and prayers. We also wish for a speedy recovery for all of those injured, including the many with ties to Alberta.

If you would like to help, a fund has been set up to support the victims and their families: https://ca.gofundme.com/funds-for-humboldt-broncos
