Re-Implementation of Sport in a School Setting

January 15, 2021 Covid Clarification Update Memo can be read here.

School athletics is very important in the lives of students; the involvement of over 55,000 annual student athletes and 10,000 volunteer coaches support this assertion.

At this time of uncertainty surrounding Coronavirus COVID-19 and the impact on our lives, the first and foremost responsibility of schools will be the health and safety of all involved in education. School athletics is important for the physical, social, emotional and mental health of student athletes and coaches, and the ASAA believes that schools need to have a plan of action in place to ensure the health and safety of all involved in school athletics when it returns.

While it may be some time before interschool athletic competition resumes, current Government of Alberta documents allow for sport to occur under clear guidelines and restrictions. Regardless of whether or not your school district will permit athletics to occur at this time, it is prudent for each school to prepare a plan of action to ensure a safe return to athletics when permitted by your school district and principal. This new section of the ASAA website provides sport specific recommendations and links to the respective Provincial Sport Organization “return to play” guidelines for each ASAA sport. Further the ASAA has released General Guidelines (link here) to assist you with your preparation to reintroduce school athletics in your school.

Currently the Government of Alberta is in Stage 2 of their relaunch plan. There is currently no timeline for when the Government of Alberta will move into Stage 3 or what Stage 3 would mean for High School Athletics. This document was developed with the expectation that we will be in Stage 2 when Alberta schools open in the fall of 2020. In the event that Alberta does move into Stage 3 of the Alberta Government’s relaunch, there will be changes to the Guidelines. Please check regularly for updates.
