Happy International Women’s Day, especially to those women who are involved in high school sport.

Today celebrates all women, but our focus is on women who are role models in high school sport across the province. Whether they are athletes, coaches, Athletic Directors, or other supporters, we appreciate everything you do and we would like to say thank-you for all of the work that you put in throughout the year.

The number of female Athletic Directors in the ASAA has nearly tripled since 1985, but we still need to push to create equal representation in leadership roles in sports groups. Currently, only 25% of ASAA Commissioners and 17% of the ASAA Executive Committee are women. These numbers vary through the years, but we hope to see more of an upward trend in the future.

“We have come a long way in recognizing and celebrating the involvement of women and girls in the sport system, but we have a long way to go. More supports are needed to enhance leadership roles for women in school sport, especially for coaches and Athletic Directors. We need to challenge educational leaders at the governmental, school board and school level to support this under-represented group.” - John Paton, ASAA Executive Director

It is important that male and female students have strong female role models for inspiration and support, especially in an environment where women are under-represented. This #InternationalWomensDay, take a moment to say thank-you to your female colleauges and peers, congratulate them on their successes, and amplify their voices in your school.
