KidSport & ASAA Team Up To Support Kids In School Sports In Alberta

ALBERTA - KidSport Alberta and the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) have teamed up to ensure high school students across the province have the opportunity to participate in school sports.

The focus of this program is encouraging equal access to sport opportunities at school that support the physical and mental health of youth across Alberta.
Hundreds of students will receive funding towards participation in their school sport between now and December 2022 courtesy of the Government of Canada and Government of Alberta’s joint Sport Participation Support Program (SPSP) Grant and the new partnership between the ASAA and KidSport.

“The ASAA is proud to continue working with KidSport,” said John Paton, Executive Director of the ASAA. “We strongly believe in the importance of Alberta youth playing school sports to cultivate their skills, and support their physical and mental wellbeing. We encourage everyone who can, to make a contribution and join us in helping bring sports back across the province.”

“We’re grateful to have the opportunity to partner with the ASAA to help kids all over the province,” said Greg Ingalls, KidSport Alberta Executive Director. “By giving kids the chance to experience the power of sport during critical years of adolescent development, we are providing them with the opportunities to learn skills and lessons that can help them throughout their lives.”

INFORMATION ABOUT KidSport

KidSport is a national charity that provides assistance for sport registration fees for children from low-income families. KidSport Alberta is comprised of almost 40 locally organized community chapters and the KidSport Alberta Provincial Fund (which provides support for families in communities that do not have a local chapter) and now the ISCA KidSport Fund. In 2019 local KidSport chapters and the KidSport Alberta Provincial Fund assisted 13,677 kids from qualified families into sport by paying $3.2 million in sport registration fees. In 2020 those numbers were about ½ the previous year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on youth sporting activities. KidSport believes that sport has the power to develop children’s social, mental and physical well being, and that all kids should have the opportunity to participate.

INFORMATION ABOUT ASAA

The ASAA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that was established in 1956 to coordinate a program of worthwhile athletic activities for the young people of Alberta in an educational setting. Starting with a single championship in basketball, the ASAA now oversees the coordination of provincial championship events in 12 sports for Alberta’s high school student athletes.
