Scholarships

ASAA/Alberta Milk Scholarship Application

The Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association is proud to support the Alberta Milk-ASAA Scholarship

Number of scholarships available:

  • Maximum of one female
  • Maximum of one male

Value of scholarship: $1,000 Per Winner

Applicants must be planning to attend a post-secondary institution in Canada.

What You Have to Do

  • Receive a letter of reference from a teacher
  • Receive a reference letter from somebody in the sports community
  • Create a resume highlighting your volunteer and sports accomplishments (two pages max)
  • Write an essay exploring what sports and healthy eating mean to you (max 500 words)
  • Submit this is all on the application linked above

Who Can Win

  • Grade 12 students going into a post-secondary program
  • Students must be registered at an ASAA member School
  • Students must participate in athletic activities

Michael Vaughan "Spirit of Sport" Scholarship

Applicants for the Michael Vaughan Spirit of Sport Scholarship must

  • Be a Grade 12 student at an ASAA member school
  • Participate in multiple activities as an athlete (one sport must be an ASAA sport)
  • Have applied and been accepted to a qualified post-secondary institution for the upcoming school year.
  • Exhibit outstanding character, be a total team player by exhibiting behaviour that demonstrates putting their teammates before themselves, demonstrate the highest level of sportsmanship during their athletic career and serve as a role model for all students at their high school.
  • Display evidence in enhancing culture, building community, and providing leadership through their actions with sport.

Application Requirements:

  1. Submission of Application Form which includes:
    1. Outline of involvement in athletics
    2. Outline how servant leadership has played a role in your athletic career
    3. Written submission on three questions (max 500 words each):
  • What impact has your involvement in school sport had on you and on the school community?
  • Reflecting on what you have learned throughout your athletic career in school sport, what impact do you hope to have in the future as you move into adulthood?
  • How have you demonstrated the “Spirit of Sport” through your ASAA athletic career?
  1. Letter of Reference/Support (Maximum 2)
  2. at least one from a teacher/coach directly involved in your sport, and another as a character reference. Cannot be a family member - must be a school staff member or school coach.
  3. Letters of reference submitted must provide evidence of participation in sport, personal development, and show evidence of the student displaying the characteristics outlined in #4 & #5 of the Criteria.

ASAA Pay it Forward Scholarship Application

History

Pay It Forward Loonie Fee: Each provincial championship will charge an additional $1 for each participating student and remit those funds to the ASAA office after the championship. 100% of funds will be directed into an ASAA scholarship fund to recognize student athletes who give back to their schools and communities by either coaching or officiating in school or community sport.

Information

Available for school aged students who contribute their time to coaching and officiating in either the school or community.

We want to reward those students who “give back”. Sometimes opportunities present in the community, not the school.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be a current grade 12 high school student scheduled to graduate the same year as the application submission. Below is a list of the criteria;

  1. The student must be in good standing at their school; and
  2. The student must demonstrate their involvement in non Covid-19 impacted years as a volunteer for any grade 10, 11 and 12 year, in either ASAA or community sports. This may include involvement through roles such as:
  • Coach
  • Assistant Coach
  • Official
  • Administrative duties such as statistician, team manager, score keeping, video technician, publications, media coverage, etc.

Submission Requirements

Completion of the official online application form submitted on the ASAA website;

  • A minimum of (1) letter of recommendation from the school or community administrator;
  • A minimum of (1) letter of confirmation from the school or community association describing the applicants volunteer experience and duties or future plans due to limited or no opportunities caused by Covid-19 restrictions;
  • A head shot of the applicant; and
  • A picture or video clip of the applicants’ volunteer efforts (optional).

Scholarship Timelines

The deadline to apply is April 30th annually.

The winners will be announced in the Fall annually.

Adjudication Information

All applications will be collected by the ASAA office and submitted to the applicant’s respective Zone. The Zones will be responsible for selecting their adjudicating committee; which will be made up of no less than 3 teachers (retired or active) OR Zone Executive members. Each Zone adjudicating committee will select a winner and provide a response to the ASAA office no later than June 20th annually. The winners will be announced on June 30th annually.
